A GREAT 20TH CENTURY ARTIST

PABLO’S FIRST WORD
Pablo Picasso was born in Spain in 1881. He loved drawing and painting.
In fact, the first word he could say was ‘piz’, short for lápiz, the Spanish word for ‘pencil’. His father Ruiz, an artist and art teacher, started to teach him art from the age of 7. Pablo soon became a better artist than his father.

PABLO’S FIRST PAINTING
At the age of 9, Pablo completed his first painting: Le Picador, a man riding a horse. Picasso didn’t like school very much, but it was obvious he was an extremely talented artist.

ART STUDIES
When he was 14, Picasso attended a famous art school in Barcelona and then a school in Madrid. He became bored very quickly in classic art lessons because he wanted to create something new.

ADULT LIFE AND SUCCESS
Picasso moved to France and started to paint in a totally new way. Soon he became very famous.
He developed many new styles of painting.
During his life, he produced over 1,800 paintings and 1,200 sculptures. We can see many of his paintings in art galleries all over the world. He is one of the greatest artists of the 20th century.
He was married twice and had four children. He died at the age of 91 in 1973.
